TEACHINGS OF RABBI ZALMAN SCHACHTER-SHALOMI
Reb Zalman's teaching career has spanned many decades. Most of his teachings were given orally and recorded; some began as written. During the past several years, we have begun an ALEPH project to review these teachings edit them, and make them available in written form as well as in audio and visual media. Rabbi Saul Baumann
Introduction and Commentaries by
Reb Zalman Schachter-ShalomiReb Zalman has hoped for many years to make available this beautiful Sefer, Shaul Baumann’s Sefer Miftachay Chokhmat Ha-Emet. The project was most recently coordinated by Reb Shaya Isenberg along with Reb Victor Gross and has benefited from the involvement of many others. We all believe that it is now time to share it in this format. Not the least of the reasons is our desire to put Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi’s amazing commentary into your hands.
Baumann’s re-presentation of Lurianic Kabbalistic cosmogony and cosmology becomes the perfect occasion for Reb Zalman to update from his own deep understanding of contemporary scientific stories of the origins and process of the universe.

The question which Reb Zalman raises at the beginning of this class is the same question we need to be raising again today. How do we live through a time of economic constraint, a time when a desire for peace and harmonious living on this miraculous planet of ours seems at odds with the direction of politics throughout the world? Reb Zalman proposes that we can respond to these times creatively by broadening our world view and the location of both our needs and the means to satisfy them to include all four of the Lurianic “worlds.” He shows how we have fallen into a narrow understanding of what life is and how we can achieve satisfaction on a deep level. He provides us with an approach to daily prayer which can reconnect us to this larger world view. In the body of the teaching, you will find this practice described three separate times, each with its unique focus. In between these descriptions, Reb Zalman provides his analysis and rationale along with an introduction to the four worlds, so important to his teaching and to Jewish spiritual renewal. Reb Zalman is arguing both for the value of a daily practice and for the notion that a spiritual practice must be good enough to carry the practitioner through difficult as well as easy times.$10.50 Click here to purchase
Reb Zalman calls us to pay mindful attention to the calendar, the stages of the moon, the seasons of the year, the cycles of the weeks, and the process of redemption. In this teaching, Reb Zalman also shows us that we can duplicate these cycles in miniature even on a daily basis. Thus, this teaching provides a meditation both on the year and for each day of the year.
