Scholarships are available for Canadian Rabbinic, Cantorial, Rabbinic Pastor or Hashpa'ah students (ordination stream) in the ALEPH Ordination Program (AOP).

The Scholarship Fund is open to all students in any of these ordination programs who have full-time residency in Canada. 

The Scholarship Fund was created to facilitate the teaching of Rabbi Daniel Siegel and Rabbi Hanna Tiferet Siegel, as well as to support the studies of Canadian students living in Canada who are registered and in good standing in any of the ordination programs mentioned above.  

CRITERIA FOR CONSIDERATION

You may apply for this scholarship if you are an AOP student in good standing with full-time Canadian residency.

You may apply for this scholarship to help defray the cost of attending an AOP ordination program, including the costs associated with purchasing books or materials, paying for Director of Studies, attending in-person or online retreats or classes, and the burden of the US/CDN dollar exchange rate.

There is no financial assessment of students for the purpose of this scholarship. Criteria for consideration include the following, in order: 

1. You are a student in good standing in any of the AOP ordination programs, and you are studying with Rabbi Daniel Siegel, Rabbi Hanna Tiferet Siegel, or another recognized Jewish Renewal-associated teacher in Canada. 

2. You will attend Smicha Week, OHALAH, DLTI (Davvening Leadership Training Institute), Kallah or another required in-person, online, or residency AOP event or program where Rabbi Daniel Siegel or Rabbi Hanna Tiferet Siegel will be teaching. 

3. You wish to take a course for AOP credit with Rabbi Daniel Siegel and/or Rabbi Hanna Tiferet Siegel and/or another teacher residing in Canada. 

4. You wish to register for any in-person or distance learning course for AOP credit. 

5. You are an ordination student living full-time in Canada, and you are in good standing in any of these programs, and you would benefit from support to help defray some of the costs. 

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS

Annual deadline for receipt of applications is the day after the last day of Passover each year. Applicants will be notified of the Scholarship Fund Committee decision no later than Shavuot each year.

ABOUT RABBI DANIEL SIEGEL

Rabbi Daniel Siegel was the Rabbinic Director of ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal from 1997-2004, Director of Spiritual Resources, Associate Dean of the Ordination Programs, and Chair of the Rabbinic Studies section of that program until the summer of 2015. He founded and served as Rabbinic Director of ALEPH Canada and also is the founding director of the Integral Halachah Institute. 

In 1974, he was the first person to receive semicha/rabbinic ordination from Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi as rabbi and colleague. In 2003, he received a second ordination as a Dayan/Adjudicator from Reb Zalman. He has a BA from Rutgers University and an MA from Temple University. Reb Daniel served two college campuses – the University of British Columbia and Dartmouth College – for a total of more than twenty years. 

He is the father of three sons and grandfather to two girls. He lives on Hornby Island, British Columbia, where he serves as president of the Hornby Island Residents and Ratepayers Association, has served as past chair of the Hornby Island Community Economic Enhancement Corporation, and tends a garden. 

His first congregation was in Thunder Bay, Ontario (1972-74), still nominally Orthodox. It was during those two years that he studied most intensely with Reb Zalman, driving to Winnipeg every four to six weeks. After a year in Victoria (1975-76) and another in Philadelphia (1976-77) where he and his family lived with R. Zalman, he co-founded Or Shalom in Vancouver together with his wife and partner, Rabbi and Eshet Hazon Hanna Tiferet. Concurrently with his work at Dartmouth College, he served as the rabbi for the Upper Valley Jewish Community in Hanover, NH. He and Hanna Tiferet served as co-spiritual leaders of B’nai Or in Boston from 1998-2005. 

Reb Daniel is a certified mediator who co-founded a successful mediation program at Dartmouth College. He also served as the placement director for the Reconstructionist Movement for three years. He is a member of OHALAH, the Association of Rabbis, Cantors, and Rabbinic Pastors for the Renewal of Judaism. 

Reb Daniel is the editor of ALEPH’s Siddur Kol Koreh project and numerous teachings of Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, as well as the author of several articles including “Moon: White Sliver of Shechinah’s Return,” an essay on covenantal naming ceremonies for girls. ABOUT RABBI hanna tiferet siegel

Rabbi Hanna Tiferet Siegel is a poet and mystic through whom song and inspiration flow. She has recorded eight albums of original liturgical music. In 1982, she was the first woman to receive the title Eshet Hazon/Woman of Vision and Midwife of the Soul. 

With her husband, Rabbi Daniel, she has helped to build and sustain communities in Vancouver, BC, Hanover, NH, and Boston, MA. In addition to serving as a Spiritual Guide in the ALEPH Clergy Program, she is a Soul Memory Facilitator and a Baba (Grandmother).
